Kyrgyz woman thwarted from going to Syria

Staff Report

BISHKEK -- Turkish authorities prevented a Kyrgyz woman from going to Syria to join the insurgency, said the Kyrgyz State National Security Committee (GKNB) in a statement Thursday (May 4).

Authorities extradited her to Kyrgyzstan April 29, said the GKNB. It identified her as I. G. of Batken Province, born in 1989.

Recruiters of an international terrorist group sent her to Turkey with the intention of journeying to Syria, but she was thwarted, said the GKNB without giving more details.

She and her child are staying with family while authorities seek to identify the individuals who recruited her and sent the pair to Turkey.
