2,000 Kyrgyz belong to extremist groups: official

Staff Report

BISHKEK -- About 2,000 Kyrgyz belong to extremist organisations, an Interior Ministry (MVD) official said Tuesday (June 20) in Bishkek, according to the MVD press office.

Erlan Bakiyev, an official in the MVD's 10th Administration (which fights extremism) gave the estimate at an international forum on fighting terrorism.

The most active participants in extremist movements in Kyrgyzstan are aged 25 to 30, he said, adding that from 2010 to 2017 so far, authorities recorded 1,600 extremist crimes.

Extremist offences in Kyrgyzstan include arousing religious enmity and calling for the government's overthrow, he said.
