ASTANA -- Kazakhstan is formally protesting to Egypt the detention of six Kazakhstani men, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported Tuesday (August 1), quoting the Kazakhstani Foreign Ministry.

Kazakhstan asked Egypt to explain the men's detention and to allow Kazakhstani diplomats to talk to them, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Anuar Zhainaqov.

Egypt has not explained why it arrested the six students on July 19, he added.

The Kazakhstanis were studying Arabic and shared a Cairo apartment.

They are not thought to be extremists, said Zhainaqov earlier.
