DUSHANBE -- A Dushanbe court sentenced a Tajik doctor to 13 years' imprisonment for treating Gulmurod Khalimov, the renegade Tajik police commander who joined "Islamic State" (IS), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported Wednesday (August 2), quoting court officials.

The date of the sentencing was not disclosed.

Makhmadiyev was arrested in Turkey in 2016 and was extradited in March. The Dushanbe court convicted him of treating Khalimov's combat injuries in June 2015 in Syria, according to Interfax. Makhmadiyev was working in Russia when he travelled to Syria in 2015.

Khalimov, a former commander of Tajikistan's OMON riot police, defected to IS in May 2015. He is wanted for treason in Tajikistan.

A new photo of Khalimov appeared on news websites Monday (July 31).

I don't get it! The doctor took the Hippocratic oath that he would treat everybody, regardless of their faith, class, or system of beliefs. I graduated from medical school myself, and they taught us to help everyone. Even during World War II, doctors treated the fascists in occupation zones, and no one blamed them or filed criminal charges against them [doctors] after the war. It is so nuts!
