Tajik forces kill 2 drug traffickers on Afghan border

DUSHANBE -- Tajik authorities the night of Saturday-Sunday (August 19-20) killed two Afghan drug traffickers in Hamadoni District, Khatlon Province, RIA Novosti reported Monday (August 21), quoting Interior Ministry (MVD) spokesman Umarjon Emomali.

The operation was a joint effort by the MVD, State National Security Committee and border troops, he said, adding that the forces exchanged fire with Afghan drug smugglers trying to enter Tajikistan.

Two Afghans were killed and authorities are pursuing the others, he said, adding that they arrested a suspected Tajik accomplice.

The troops confiscated 114kg of drugs at the scene, including 21.2kg of opium, said Emomali.
