ASTANA -- Kazakhstan has made progress in medicine and other areas since declaring independence 26 years ago, says Health Minister Yelzhan Birtanov, reported Kazinform Monday (December 18).

Birtanov posted his remarks on the Health Ministry's Facebook page Saturday (December 16) while congratulating colleagues on the country's Independence Day.

Since Kazakhstan's independence on December 16, 1991, the country has built 1,326 healthcare facilities. The life expectancy of the country's citizens "has grown by 4.5 years to 72.5 years and maternal mortality has fallen by 5.3-fold, while infant mortality has declined by threefold", the minister said.

The mortality rates for TB, circulatory ailments and cancer have declined by "threefold, twofold and 1-5 fold", respectively, he added.

About 400,000 Kazakhstanis consult physicians and more than 8,000 patients are taken to hospitals every day, said the minister, citing official figures.

"These achievements are the result of our medics' work," he said.
