ASTANA -- A Kazakhstani national who was among those killed in a terrorist attack on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul Saturday (January 20) has been identified, reported Kazinform.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the massacre, which left at least 19 people dead.

The victim is a businessman from Astana who was born in 1978, Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry reported Monday (January 22).

"We cannot give his last name, but we can confirm that the victim was in Afghanistan on a business trip since October-November [2017]," ministry spokesman Anuar Zhainakov said Monday.

The victim was invited to Afghanistan by an Afghan telecom firm, he said.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim and will provide necessary assistance in this situation," Zhainakov said, adding that Kazakhstani diplomats in Afghanistan are working to repatriate the victim's remains.
