ASTANA -- Central Asian countries celebrated Nawruz Tuesday (March 20), local media reported Wednesday (March 21).

The non-religious holiday, which is celebrated March 19-21 depending on the spring equinox, pre-dates Islam.

Nonetheless, the atheistic Soviet regime prohibited it in all Central Asian states and in Azerbaijan. Kazakhstan restored the holiday in March 1991, nine months before the Soviet collapse.
