Kazakhstani man sentenced to 5 years for promoting terrorism online


ASTANA -- A court in Sayram District, South Kazakhstan Province, Tuesday (March 27) sentenced a man from Karabulak village to five years in prison for promoting terrorism and inciting inter-faith discord on the internet, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL)'s Kazakh service reported Wednesday (March 28).

The defendant, Dastanbek Berdimuratov, posted the ideas of international terrorist groups on a social networking page in April 2015, said prosecutor Bauyrjan Userkhan.

He was arrested last August.

Berdimuratov made posts saying it was every Muslim's duty to participate in combat and in "jihad", according to Userkhan.
