Kyrgyz parliament approves dismissal of Isakov's government

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz lawmakers Thursday (April 19) voted overwhelmingly to dismiss the country's 29th prime minister in less than three decades of independence.

Legislators voted 101-5 to dismiss Prime Minister Sapar Isakov, who has been viewed as a loyalist of the country's former leader, Almazbek Atambayev.

The move showed broad parliamentary support for President Sooronbai Jeenbekov, who already signed an order confirming the government's dismissal and most likely will play an important role in naming the next prime minister.

Earlier this month, Jeenbekov fired key Atambayev allies in the national security service and initiated the sacking of the country's state prosecutor.
