KHUJAND, Tajikistan -- The Khujand city court Wednesday (July 11) sentenced 37-year-old Vakhdat resident Sunatullo Mukhammadiyev to 15 years in a high-security penal colony for fighting alongside the "Islamic State" (IS) in Syria, Asia-Plus reported.

Mukhammadiyev, his mother, wife and three children traveled to Turkey in July 2016 and then to Syria, according to the judge presiding over the case.

He was said to have fought alongside IS militants for two months before he was detained by Syrian law enforcement and extradited to Tajikistan.

On June 13, the Khujand city court sentenced Mukhammadiyev's brother, Masrurkhon, to 12 years in a penal colony for attempting to join IS in Syria.
