TASHKENT -- An Uzbek tech firm is set to install Tashkent's first-ever free public Wi-Fi, Kazinform reported Tuesday (August 21).

Under the TasNet.uz project, Innovo.tech will install the system on the capital's Sailgoh Street, according to a statement from the municipal government's oversight council.

The system will rely on advanced equipment from US-based Ubiquiti Networks.

Innovo.tech will fully pay for experimental implementation of the project, the Tashkent oversight council posted on Facebook. "[The plan is] to gain revenue through the sale of advertising when users connect to the internet."

"If the experiment succeeds, free Wi-Fi could appear in all other public spaces of our capital, from the city's tourist attractions to its bazaars and parks," it said.

The Tashkent oversight council and the city's Tourism Development Department are both backing the project.
