ALMATY -- Kazakhstan's Committee for National Security (KNB) over the weekend detained 10 suspects accused of propagating terrorism via the internet, the KNB said in a statement Monday (October 29).

Authorities carried out searches over the weekend in Almaty city, as well as in Akmola, Almaty and Karaganda provinces, said the KNB.

The suspects allegedly used social media networks and messaging apps to "propagate terrorism and incite religious discord", said the committee, adding that more than 180 residents of Kazakhstan's 15 regions might have been members of the chat groups and online communities in question.

The KNB has launched an investigation into whether any of the detainees may have provided financial or other forms of support to terrorists.
