Kyrgyz students across country attend lectures on gender-based violence

BISHKEK -- More than 1,000 students from Kyrgyz universities across the country participated in a series of lectures aimed at raising awareness about the consequences and criminal liability of bride kidnapping and gender-based violence.

The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) organised the talks, according to a statement posted on the OSCE website Wednesday (December 12).

Gender specialists gave lectures in Karakol, Naryn, Osh, Jalal-Abad and Talas to explain the impact of bride kidnapping on the lives of victims and raising awareness on the punishments for such crimes.

The lectures began on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and concluded Monday (December 10), International Human Rights Day.

Those dates mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, an annual international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls.
