BISHKEK -- The mayor's office of Bishkek instructed the administrations of all schools, pre-schools, markets and shopping centres of the capital to strengthen fire safety measures ahead of the New Year, 24.kg reported Tuesday (December 18).

"The risk of fires will increase soon as everyone will set off firecrackers; we have to do preventive work," Mayor Aziz Surakmatov said at a city administration meeting Tuesday.

Participants of the meeting were especially concerned about children's playgrounds, cinemas and other entertainment facilities situated on the upper floors of shopping centres, including some that have no emergency exit signs.

"We know that there is such a problem, but nothing is being done [so far]," said Surakmatov.

He urged the representatives of the State Environmental and Technical Inspectorate to bring all facilities into compliance.

"Issue recommendations if there is a violation, so it can be eliminated," he said.
