KAZAKHSTAN -- The Kazakh movie "Ayka" is among the nine films short listed for the 2019 Oscar for best foreign-language motion picture, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported Tuesday (December 18).
The short list was announced Monday (December 17) by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the United States.
Kazakh director Sergei Dvortsevoi's movie tells the story of an unemployed single mother from Kyrgyzstan who tries to survive in Moscow.
Kazakh actress Samal Eslyamova, who plays the heroine, won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
