DUSHANBE -- United Nations (UN) specialists and government officials from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan gathered in Dushanbe Tuesday-Wednesday (February 12-13) to discuss migration issues and refugee protection challenges in Central Asia, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said in a statement.

The IOM and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) organised the First Technical Experts' Group Meeting with funding from the US Department of State..

The meeting is part of the Almaty Process, a regional consultative process to address regional migration challenges that includes Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan. Tajikistan is to chair the process for 2019-2020.

"The Almaty Process is an important platform for Central Asia governments to continue dialogue on human mobility and the rights of migrants in their region," IOM Tajikistan Chief of Mission Cristina Tranca said, according to the statement.

"Migrant protection, combating human trafficking and irregular migration, promoting migrant integration and whole-of-government approaches to migration management, continue to be the most relevant topics in Central Asia’s migration landscape," she said.

"The process brings together migration professionals towards co-ordinated action for safer migration," Tranca added.
