US removes Uzbek cotton from child-labour list

WASHINGTON, DC -- The US government has removed Uzbek cotton from its list of goods "produced by forced or indentured child labour", according to a notice posted by the US Labour Department Monday (March 25).

The determination comes after three US Cabinet departments last July proposed taking Uzbek cotton off that list. After reviewing comments received and available information, the US government found "that the use of forced child labor in the cotton harvest in Uzbekistan has been significantly reduced to isolated incidents", according to the Labour Department.

Uzbek cotton had been on the list since 2010.
