US praises Kyrgyz human rights progress

BISHKEK -- A new US State Department report highlights "significant achievements" on human rights by Kyrgyzstan, the US embassy in Bishkek said in a Wednesday (April 17) statement.

The State Department released the Kyrgyz- and Russian-language translations of the 2018 Kyrgyz Republic Human Rights Report Tuesday (April 16).

Kyrgyz achievements include "establishment by the Kyrgyz government of strong torture monitoring bodies to reduce the use of torture now and prevent torture in the future" and "The participation of women and minorities in the political process", according to the report.

"We congratulate the Kyrgyz Republic on its most positive Human Rights Report in the past five years," said US Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Donald Lu, according to the embassy.
