Kazakh, US officials discuss co-operation on counter-terrorism

WASHINGTON, DC -- US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo received Kazakh Presidential Special Envoy and National Security Committee (KNB) Chairman Karim Massimov in Washington, DC, Friday (April 26), the US embassy in Kazakhstan said in a statement Monday (April 29).

Topics included co-operation on counter-terrorism, Kazakhstan's historic presidential transition, and the country's upcoming election in June, according to the embassy.

During the meeting, Pompeo welcomed Kazakhstan's support for a lasting peace in Afghanistan.

He also highlighted the human rights crisis in western China and expressed the United States' strong support for its victims, many of whom are ethnic Kazakhs living in Xinjiang, China.
