GULISTON, Tajikistan -- A three-day capacity-building course on preventing and countering violent extremism and radicalisation leading to terrorism (VERLT) occurred in Guliston May 2-4, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) said in a statement Wednesday (May 8).
The course was the final phase in "equipping public council members with relevant knowledge and skills to address and integrate aspects of preventing and countering VERLT into community policing efforts", said the OSCE.
More than half of the 20 participants were women. All participants came from Regional Public Councils on Police Reform. The training was meant to consolidate theoretical knowledge that the trainees acquired during basic courses in February and March 2019.
The trainees developed various initiatives meant to eradicate the root causes of VERLT at grass-roots level.
Such initiatives are meant for integration into the annual working plans of Public Councils and practical implementation, subject to approval by Tajik Interior Ministry (MVD) senior management.
Public Councils on Police Reform are advisory bodies to the MVD that operate at regional level. Comprised of civil society activists, they promote community policing in their effort to strengthen civilian-police relations.
