By Dzhumaguly Annayev

ASHGABAT -- A United Nations mission (UN) Thursday (June 27), visiting the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan (UIET) in Ashgabat, discussed the harmful effects of unemployment, according to an UIET leader who requested anonymity.

Christopher O. Donnell, chief of the UN Counter-Terrorism Implementation Co-ordination Section, led the mission. Unemployment and economic hardship are considered to be causes of extremism.

Solving unemployment will combat the country's social problems, agreed the participants.

About 60% of working-age adults nationwide are unemployed, according to foreign media.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov June 14 approved a programme to help young Turkmens adapt to the labour market.
