Taliban, ISIL failed to achieve goals in Afghanistan, Abdullah says

Staff Report

WARSAW -- Both the Taliban and the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) have failed to achieve their goals in Afghanistan, Afghan government CEO Abdullah Abdullah told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL)'s Tajik service in an interview published July 11. Abdullah gave the interview during NATO's summit in Warsaw last week.

The Taliban mistakenly thought that they would seize the majority of Afghan territory in 2015, he said. ISIL is a "headache" but has no future in Afghanistan, he said, adding that the people turned against the brutal group.

"A year or two ago, [ISIL] began to operate in the country's east," he said. "But the people rose up against it. And government forces conducted themselves properly. [ISIL] has no future now. But I don't doubt that it will remain a problem for our country and other countries."
