Tajik family inquires about suspected militant's whereabouts

Staff Report

DUSHANBE -- Relatives of a suspected Tajik militant are inquiring about his whereabouts, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported July 26.

Zoir Ismanov of Sari Mazor village, Khatlon Province, was arrested on the Turkish-Syrian border one month ago. His family says he was extradited to Tajikistan July 21 but are waiting to establish contact with him.

Usmonov became radicalised while working abroad, his family says.

Usmonov was one of two residents of Khovaling District, Khatlon Province, known to have joined militants in Syria and Iraq, Jangikhon Odinayev, chief of the district government's office for religious affairs, told RFE/RL.

The Tajik government says 1,094 citizens have joined the insurgency in the Middle East since 2011, and about 300 of those have since been killed.
