No slowing in recruitment into extremist groups: Kazakhstan official

By Alexander Bogatik

ASTANA -- The pace of recruitment of Kazakhstani citizens into extremist movements is not slowing down, said Nurgali Bilisbekov, deputy chairman of the National Security Committee (KNB), at a Tuesday (April 4) cabinet session, according to Tengri News. He did not cite comparative recruitment figures.

In 2016, Kazakhstani authorities prevented 12 terrorist acts, convicted 123 defendants of terrorist and extremist offences, and prevented 91 would-be militants from leaving Kazakhstan to join foreign terrorist groups, he said.

However, they failed to thwart deadly terrorist attacks in Aktobe and Almaty last year, he noted.
