BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan is set to begin its spring military draft March 1, according to a military official, 24.kg reported.

The country conducts a draft every spring and fall.

Ruslan Abdyrakhmanov, a State Committee for Defence Affairs official, made his remarks Monday (February 26) during a news conference in Bishkek.

The military will be assessing the physical fitness of conscripts by conducting full medical exams and testing their ability to do pull-ups and run for 100 metres and 3km, he said.

Officials will record the exams on video to reduce the risk of corruption, he added.

During the fall draft, the Ministry of Health will introduce psychological screenings of draftees, he said.

The number of conscripts has been growing in recent years, he said, citing the removal of various exemptions.
