BISHKEK -- At least 271,000 Kyrgyz families are living below the poverty line, said a Kyrgyz lawmaker Friday (March 2), 24.kg reported. The country has a population of about 6 million.
Ruslan Kazakbayev, chief of the Respublika-Ata Jurt (Republic-Fatherland) party, made his remarks during a party meeting.
The minimum subsistence level in Kyrgyzstan is 4,900 KGS ($72) per month.
However, daily expenditures of 120,000 families do not even reach 68 KGS ($1), especially in rural areas, according to Kazakbayev.
