PETROPAVLOVSK, Kazakhstan -- A Petropavlovsk court July 19 sentenced Marat Umirzakov, 47, to seven years in prison for joining the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL) in Syria in 2012, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported July 19.
Umirzakov that year travelled to Turkey and then to Syria to join ISIL, prosecutors said.
Umirzakov's lawyer said he would appeal the sentence.
