TASHKENT -- Uzbekistani President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is proposing direct elections for mayors and provincial governors, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported Thursday (December 8), quoting a speech that he gave in Tashkent Wednesday (December 7).
"Local officials will be more responsible if they are elected by the people," he said.
The president currently appoints governors and mayors in Uzbekistan.
