DUSHANBE -- A Dushanbe court sentenced a man to 12.5 years in prison for seeking to join the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (ISIL), Avesta.tj reported Wednesday (April 5).
The defendant, identified only as M. Butayev, became radicalised while working abroad in 2016, according to the Tajik general prosecutor's office. He accepted an online acquaintance's invitation to come to Syria.
Authorities in his host country nabbed Butayev when he was trying to board the first plane on his intended journey to Syria.
