Kazakhstan develops prison theology department

By Alexander Bogatik

ASTANA -- The Kazakhstani Interior Ministry (MVD) is developing a department of theologians to counsel prisoners, Vlast.kz reported Monday (September 25), quoting Interior Minister Kalmukhanbet Kasymov.

About 400 prisoners are serving sentences in Kazakhstan for extremism or terrorism. The theologians are working with the Religious Affairs and Civil Society Ministry, said Kasymov, adding that so far they are seeing favourable results in their work with convicts.

"We'll keep developing [this service]," said Kasymov. "Of course, it's something new for us."
