WASHINGTON -- The US State Department added Uzbek militant group Imam Bukhari Jamaat (IBJ) to its list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists, according to a Thursday (March 22) statement.

Also known as Katibat al-Imam al-Bukhari (KIB), the group "is the largest Uzbek fighting force in Syria", according to the statement. It described IBJ as an ally of Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (formerly known as al-Nusra Front), al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria.

The designation blocks any IBJ "property or interests in property subject to US jurisdiction" and generally prohibits US persons "from engaging in any transactions with the group".

IBJ, which also has a branch in Afghanistan, swears allegiance to the Afghan Taliban, according to Long War Journal blog.
