Russia threatens grieving Syrian town with further bombardment

EASTERN GHOUTA, Syria -- Russia and its ally Syria have threatened to resume bombing the final opposition holdout of Douma in Eastern Ghouta unless rebels there agree to evacuate, sources told AFP Tuesday (March 27).

Following unsuccessful talks, Russia gave Jaish al-Islam, the Islamist faction that holds Douma, a few days before a military assault on the town, the sources said.

Syrian troops have already captured more than 90% of Eastern Ghouta through a blistering assault that has killed more than 1,600 civilians, more than a fifth of them children.

The international community has accused Russia of being complicit in atrocities committed by Syrian regime, including accusations by the United Nations that both are orchestrating an "apocalypse".
