Tajik court sentences would-be IS member to 12 years in prison

TURSUNZODA, Tajikistan -- The Tursunzoda city court sentenced a 23-year-old man to 12 years in prison for attempting to join and fight alongside "Islamic State" (IS), Asia-Plus reported Tuesday (March 5), citing the Tajik Prosecutor General's Office.

Jurabek Sultonov reportedly became acquainted with IS ideas through social media while working as a labour migrant in Russia.

After deciding to join IS, Sultonov left Moscow last November and reached Istanbul via Kyiv, Ukraine.

Turkish forces caught him last December when he was trying to illegally enter Syria.
