Police enforce new curfew in Turkmenabad

TURKMENABAD, Turkmenistan -- Police in Turkmenabad, Lebap Province, have been enforcing a new curfew the past few days, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported, quoting residents.

Police have been warning locals outdoors after 10pm to be home before 11pm, RFE/RL reported, adding that they have been taking anybody outdoors after 11pm into custody. They hold the detainees for up to 18 hours.

Authorities have not explained the new curfew.

Turkmenabad is in Lebap Province, which borders Afghanistan.
