BISHKEK -- A Bishkek court June 9 sentenced an Islamist to life in prison for attempting to kill a Kyrgyz theologian in Bishkek last November.
Alibek Tilek-Uulu stabbed Kadyr Malikov, director of the Bishkek think tank Religion, Law and Politics, near Malikov's house.
Tilek-Uulu and another suspect, Ryskul Beishenaliyev, were captured in Turkey soon after the assault. Beishenaliyev's legal situation was not reported.
Tilek-Uulu and Beishenaliyev were planning to join militants in Syria, Kyrgyz authorities say.
