Turkmen-Afghans defend Turkmen border from Afghan Taliban

By Dzhumaguly Annayev

JAWZJAN, Afghanistan -- An anti-Taliban brigade comprised of members of Afghanistan's ethnic Turkmen minority will defend a segment of the Turkmen border from any attempts at spill-over by the Afghan Taliban, the commander of that brigade told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty recently. The unit fights in Karkin District, Jawzjan Province.

The commander of the Arbeki brigade, identified only as Gurbandurdy, made the vow in an interview.

"We have our own reinforced outposts," he said. "If we didn't have them, the Taliban would have gone to the Turkmen border in our zone long ago."

The brigade took up arms against the Taliban at the request of the population of Karkin District, he said.
