22 Tajiks from 1 district accused of fighting in Mideast

Staff Report

DUSHANBE -- Tajik President Emomali Rahmon July 27 expressed concern about the radicalisation of Tajik youth, AsiaPlus.tj reported that day, quoting Rahmon's press office.

Speaking to an audience of influential citizens in Khamadoni District, Khatlon Province, Rahmon noted that authorities have filed charges in absentia against 22 residents of that district. They are all accused of fighting in the Middle East as militants.

Two other residents have been killed in the fighting, he said. Two families of 12 members each accounted for all 24 suspected militants, he said.

"Young people who have lost their way don't understand that so-called Islamic movements use the sacred Islamic religion as a mask," Rahmon told the audience.
