Suspected extremists planned 9/11-like attack, Kazakhs say

Staff Report

ALMATY -- Extremist suspects arrested recently in Almaty were planning to hijack a plane for a "9/11-style" attack, the Kazakhstani National Security Committee (KNB) said September 5, according to a Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty report September 6.

Authorities have arrested eight extremist groups since January in Kazakhstan, the KNB said. One group arrested in Karaganda Province in June was planning to attack local infrastructure, while three groups apprehended in West Kazakhstan and Aktobe provinces August 12-30 were plotting to attack police and civilians, the KNB added.
