BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan's prosecutors charged a former president with corruption Tuesday (June 25), paving the way for parliament to lift his immunity.
The state prosecutor's office said it had sent the charge for consideration by parliament.
If 81 out of parliament's 120 members vote to end Almazbek Atambayev's immunity, he may be prosecuted for crimes committed while in office. Atambayev was president from 2011 to 2017.
Well done, Kyrgyz. You accuse your president of corruption. That's good. That's what democracy looks like.
