Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan discuss construction of more border crossings

Staff Report

TASHKENT -- Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are discussing the possible construction of more border crossings, Podrobno.uz reported Thursday (March 30), quoting the Kazakhstani Finance Ministry.

An agreement to expand border co-operation emerged from the March 23 summit in Astana of Uzbekistani and Kazakhstani presidents Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Nursultan Nazarbayev. At the time, Kazakhstani Investments and Development Minister Zhenis Kasymbek mentioned two new check-points, Tselinnyi and Syrdarya, which already have opened. The crossings under consideration would be in addition to those two.

The countries also intend to expand the hours of existing crossings. Kazakhstan plans to renovate five check-points on the boundary of South Kazakhstan Province in 2018 and 2019.
